Sizing for performance – Primary Storage Sizing Tool

You have been asked to size an HPE Nimble Storage solution for a customer.The customer has provided the following details:   

Current storage requirement is 29 TiB for a VMware VSphere infrastructure. The total IOPS requirement is 7700 IOPS, although this has not yet been broken down more precisely.  

The VSphere infrastructure is roughly an equal mix of MS SQL Server, Oracle server and file server.  

25GbE data network.  

Easy upgrade path required.  

Yearly Change Rate is approximately 12%  

Expected to server the company for 5 years   

 

Login to HPE InfoSight at https://infosight.hpe.com using the credentials:  

Username: demouser.cloudteam@gmail.com  

Password: ITAdmin1234!

 

Click on the Alletra 6000 – Nimble >> Planning menu item

Click on Primary Storage Sizing Tool 

Using the customer data, work through the wizard to size a solution for performance. 

(This tool is not usually used to size for capacity.) 

If you are unsure of any values, accept the default selections.  

Which controller model does the tool recommend?  Change the Confidence level to “Confident”.  Has this changed the recommendation?  

Which controller model presents the lowest “usable capacity needs”?  

Which controller model presents the lowest “total cache needs”?

Download the current version of NinjaSTARS from https://saf.itcs.hpe.com/ 

Open NinjaSTARS 

On the Welcome screen, click on the HPE Nimble Storage item on the navigation bar on the left hand side 

Select HPE Nimble Storage Gen 5 

Select AF40 

Select the largest capacity SSDs 

Select the ethernet and fibre channel connectivity ports 

Select the Data Reduction tab and then add a 50TB “SQL Server” application workload. 

What is the effective capacity for this array? 

Click on the View menu and change the number presentation to base2 

What is the effective capacity for this array in TiB? 

Export your solution to a PDF file  

 

Customer Scenario – HPE Nimble Storage Array 

Create a new HPE Nimble Storage Sizing configuration 

Choose the array model based on the HPE Primary Sizing Tool recommendation from earlier in the exercise
